Plastics are considered the most anti-eco friendly material in the whole of earth. The easiest target for any one who brags to be an environmental activist. You travel to a beautiful village and see a board welcoming you saying "This is a plastic free zone". There are even gated communities in the urban area with similar boards. Plastics are considered a hazard for anything to do with tourism. There are videos and viral mails spreading with "Plastics are evil" message and showing pictures of cows eating plastic bags, birds entangled in plastic wires, cross section of soil beds with plastic bags filled within them, scenic backwaters with plastic bottles floating around etc.
Lets list out the evils of Plastics:
1. They are non degradable. The more plastic you use, the greater the chances of environmental damage *Tremble! tremble! :(*
2. The produce poisonous gas on combustion and cause air pollution *cough cough*
3. They are made of non-renewable petroleum products (see, I knew there's something responsible for the rising gas prices!!!)
4. They fill the soil and upset the water cycle
5. Plastic bags suffocate and kill infants (Cruels plastics! They should be hanged for it)
6. Animals and birds ingest plastics and end up in big trouble (they must be real hungry)
7. Plastic articles leach toxic materials and poison people. The kids by playing with the toys, by drinking water from a plastic bottle etc get killed :(

BUT - it becomes a problem if YOU act like an uncivilized prick and throw the plastic articles around. There is a way to dispose them, coz they are RECYCLABLE (Another reason why you should use plastics instead of any other material but only if you are a civilized one.)
Being recyclable makes them all the more eco-friendly. Most of the plastics (read thermoplastics) are recyclable and can be used again to make another articles by granulation and further moulding. We should really tap this property of the material and save the planet by stop cutting down trees to use as lumber and for making paper (polymeric, reusable papers are already in but not widely used)
2. They produce toxic gas (CO mostly) on combustion
On combustion!!! and so do most of other stuff too. BTW why should you ever burn them when they are recyclable??? You must be crazy to burn a material which is almost 100% recyclable.
Petroleum products produce CO (Carbon Monoxide) on combustion but why don't you stop using them to save the planet?

Really? I know petroleum products are non-renewable but nobody refines petroleum exclusively for making Plastics. They are made from the byproducts from the petroleum refining process to make Petrol, Diesel etc. Do you think we will stop refining petroleum and using gas? If they don't make plastic out this waste, they may have to throw that into the sea or something. So again that's another way Plastics save the planet.
The most important part where plastics save the non-renewable petroleum products are through fuel saving. Literally!!! You know how? By increasing the fuel efficiency of our vehicles by reducing the weight of them. Remember those days when cars were made fully of metal and gave terrible fuel economy? Even our airplanes are super efficient since we started making them with plastic composites. See how cool plastics are? We even make rockets with plastic composites :D

Only if YOU are dumb enough not to recycle them and throw them into the landfill. So here its plastics who blocks the water cycle or you?

Dude, animals and birds eat it because YOU throw it around places where they used to find food. Get real!

Adulteration is done even to the food we eat. We don't stop eating food and stamp it as poison because some jerk mixed it with crap to earn more money. There are regulations on what additives should be used for various plastic articles based on their application. Food grade material should use food grade additives, industrial material can use another grade and stuff like that. But sometimes YOU mix it with toxic materials for easy money and blame it on plastics.
Before we fight against plastics next time please understand that not just plastic bags are plastics but almost everything we use everyday are plastics/polymers. The clothes we use, majority of our automobile parts, PC cabinets, utensils, paints (yes!), tapes, adhesives, thermocol (EPS), cell phone cabinets, tables (even the binder used in the particle boards), tooth brush, floor coverings, dental floss, bottles (PET bottles are 100% recyclable but there are terrible rumors by ignorant jerks), rocket cases, airplane bodies etc etc etc. Well, it is easier to name what are NOT plastics. They are great insulators and hence keep things cool/hot/safe, can be made into flammable/flame retardant/ flexible/ tough/ colorful/ transparent/.../... by changing the additives and formulations. They are the wonders in material science. What will you do without these?
Guys, let's face the facts. Plastics are one of the most important things in our lives. They are literally AWESOME. They help us against deforestation, they make thinks light, give superb efficiencies (including fuel efficiency), they have an awesome strength/weight ratio, they save painting etc etc. All we have to do is to dispose them in a proper manner and utilize their recyclable nature. Start from simple things like reusing plastic bags, reducing the number of bags we use, using proper disposal (segregating degradable/non-degradable waste) etc. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!!!
Conclusion
The so called environmentalists who talk against plastics are
a. Lazy asses who want to throw/litter things around
b. Ignorant fools who just blindly blame things on things :P
c. Jobless jerks who think that 'acting' like they care for environment is cool
